How Do Nail Hardeners Work? The Ingredients That Strengthen Weak Nails

Your nail is made of keratin, a protein arranged in layers. When nails are weak, soft, splitting or peeling, it usually means those keratin layers have lost cohesion and moisture, so they bend and separate instead of holding firm. A good nail strengthener works on that structure directly: it reinforces the bond between the keratin layers and supports the nail's own keratin, so it grows back harder and more resistant.

Not a base, not a polish: a treatment

Crystalline resin tears from the mastic tree

The second active is a natural one with a lovely story: crystalline resin tears from the pistachio mastic tree, native to the Greek island of Chios. This gum extract supports the nail's natural keratinization process, meaning it helps the nail produce and organise its own keratin as it grows. So while the dimethylurea reinforces the structure that is already there, the mastic resin supports healthier new growth coming through. The two work as a pair.

What is not in it, and why that matters
