What Is Skincare-Infused Make-Up, and How Do You Choose It?
Skincare-infused make-up is make-up built on a skincare base: most of the formula is the kind of ingredient you find in a serum or day cream, such as vitamin C, prebiotics or niacinamide, with the pigment carried inside it. Mavala makes three: Serum Foundation (83% skincare ingredients), Dream Foundation (76% skincare base) and Perfect Concealer (niacinamide and caffeine).

summary
In brief
- Skincare-infused make-up puts the care in first and the colour on top. The test is what the formula is mostly made of, and whether the brand names its actives, the proportion of skincare base, and its testing.
- Our make-up is conceived as skincare to improve your bare skin day by day. Our own timeline traces the idea to 1996, and a foundation on the borderline between skincare and make-up.
- Serum Foundation: 83% skincare ingredients, Vitamin C and natural prebiotics, buildable coverage, semi-matte finish, eight shades.
- Dream Foundation: 76% skincare base, plant-based Collagen-like ingredient, natural prebiotics and Swiss Mallow, medium to high coverage, for sensitive, normal to dry skin, eight shades.
- Perfect Concealer: caffeine 1% and niacinamide 2%, three shades, Gold for Make-up Product of the Year at the Health & Wellbeing Awards 2026.
- Wear it after your day cream, not instead of it.
What is skincare-infused make-up?
A traditional foundation is formulated for colour and staying power. Skincare-infused make-up starts from the other end: the skincare base is the larger part of the formula and the pigment sits within it. In ours, Serum Foundation is formulated with 83% skincare ingredients and Dream Foundation has a 76% skincare base. It evens out your skin while you wear it and looks after the skin underneath at the same time. The products that combine skincare and make-up are mainly foundations and concealers: serum foundations, skincare-based cream foundations, and concealers made with serum actives. Ours are built around the actives that run through our skincare, including Swiss Mallow flower, the soothing extract in our Swiss Skin Solution Complex.
Which brands combine skincare and make-up, and how do you tell?
Several brands now sell hybrids of skincare and make-up, and the label on its own tells you little. When you are comparing products, four things help you tell whether the skincare is real:
- Named actives with a stated purpose. Vitamin C for radiance, prebiotics for the skin's balance, niacinamide for imperfections, glycerin for hydration.
- A stated proportion of skincare base. Ours are 83% skincare ingredients (Serum Foundation) and a 76% skincare base (Dream Foundation).
- Published testing. Dermatologically tested, ophthalmologically tested for anything near the eyes, and ideally results from a stated panel over a stated period.
- Designed for daily wear over your usual skincare.
At Mavala the three we make this way are Serum Foundation, Dream Foundation and Perfect Concealer, and each has its own section below.
Why does Mavala make make-up this way?
Our make-up collection carries one line: conceived as skincare to improve your bare skin day by day. Our formulas are conceived as skincare and infused with beneficial active ingredients, to enhance without masking. It is the same order of priorities, care first and colour second, that we have kept since 1959 as an independent Swiss family laboratory in Geneva.
It is not a recent idea for us. Our own brand timeline records a foundation in 1996 that was a hybrid formula on the borderline between skincare and make-up, and the launch of Serum Foundation, a hybrid foundation infused with 83% skincare, in 2023. Dream Foundation followed, with a fuller-coverage cream formula.
Serum Foundation: which skin is it for?
We describe Mavala Serum Foundation with Vitamin C as the power of a glow serum in a second-skin foundation. It combines the radiance-boosting benefits of a glow serum with Vitamin C and natural prebiotics in a lightweight, second-skin foundation, with buildable coverage and a semi-matte finish. It is formulated with 83% skincare ingredients, is non-comedogenic and dermatologically tested, and comes in eight shades from Very Light to Very Dark. There is a longer guide to it in What is a serum foundation?
What the actives do, in our own words: Vitamin C activates the radiance of the complexion; natural prebiotics strengthen the skin barrier and the balance of its microbiome; Swiss Mallow soothes the skin; vegetable-derived glycerin hydrates it.
Who it suits. Skin that wants its own texture to show through, with cover added only where it is needed. Our French site recommends it for normal to combination skin.
How to use it. Dispense a few drops onto your face or the palm of your hand. Blend with a brush, damp sponge or your fingertips, starting from the centre of the face and working outward. Layer to reach the coverage you want, and finish with a touch of Magic Powder for long-lasting results.
Serum Foundation was named Best Foundation at the Top Santé Health & Beauty Awards 2025, after eight weeks of testing. Every award we cite is listed in Award-Winning Mavala.
Dream Foundation: which skin is it for?
Mavala Dream Foundation, Skincare-Infused, is our skincare-infused innovation for a flawless complexion. Its formula combines a plant-based Collagen-like ingredient, natural prebiotics and Swiss Mallow to improve the quality of sensitive, normal to dry skin day after day. It is a silky cream foundation with medium to high coverage, and made with naturally derived pigments, and its silky coverage hides imperfections. We describe the results as a unified and radiant complexion, and skin that is more hydrated, smoothed and plumped. Eight shades, the same run as Serum Foundation.
What the actives do, in our own words: the plant-based Collagen-like ingredient, a plant alternative to collagen, smooths and plumps the skin; natural prebiotics strengthen the skin barrier and balance its microbiome; Swiss Mallow soothes; vegetable-derived glycerin hydrates.
Who it suits. Sensitive, normal to dry skin: skin that tends to feel tight, go red or react to drier textures, and anyone who wants more evening-out in a single pass.
How to use it. After your day cream, apply a small amount to the face and blend with a brush, a damp or dry sponge, or your fingertips.
Perfect Concealer: what do the two serums do?
We describe our Award-Winning Perfect Concealer for Dark Circles as the power of two serums in a concealer. Infused with niacinamide and caffeine, it brightens the under-eye area, corrects redness, dark spots and imperfections, and hydrates the delicate skin around the eyes, for a fresh, even complexion and visibly reduced dark circles. It is ophthalmologically and dermatologically tested and comes in three shades: Light, Medium and Intense.
What the actives do, in our own words: caffeine, at 1%, reduces blue-toned dark circles; niacinamide, at 2%, smooths skin texture; natural prebiotics and Swiss Mallow do the same jobs they do in the foundations.
How to use it, three ways. As a concealer, apply small dabs to the inner and outer corners of the eyes and blend, then set with powder for lasting wear. As a corrector, apply directly to imperfections, tap gently to blend and set with powder. As a highlighter, choose a lighter shade for the high points of the face: brow bone, cupid's bow, tip of the nose.
Perfect Concealer took Gold for Make-up Product of the Year at the Health & Wellbeing Awards 2026, after Silver at the same awards in 2024.
How do you choose between Serum Foundation and Dream Foundation?
- Normal to combination skin, or a natural, lighter finish: Serum Foundation. Buildable, semi-matte, and built around Vitamin C.
- Sensitive, normal to dry skin, or more coverage in one pass: Dream Foundation. A silky cream, medium to high coverage, with the collagen-like ingredient and Swiss Mallow.
- Dark circles, redness and spots, whichever foundation you use: Perfect Concealer, over the top for targeted work, or on its own on a bare-skin day.
- Between two shades? Choose the one closest to your natural tone, tested on the jaw in daylight; a shade that is too dark shows at the jawline.
How do you wear skincare-infused make-up?
It goes on after your skincare, not instead of it. Cleanse, apply your serum, day cream and sunscreen, and let them absorb fully before the foundation, otherwise the base moves and you lose the even finish. The order of a full routine is in our guide to what order to apply skincare. Then foundation from the centre of the face outward, concealer where you need it, and a light touch of Magic Powder to set, with touch-ups where you get shine. Everything in this guide is in our Complexion collection.
What is the best make-up that is also skincare?
The one whose formula is mostly skincare, with the pigment carried inside a base of serum or cream ingredients, so it cares for the skin while it covers it, and whose maker can show you the actives, the proportion of skincare base and the testing behind it. For your own skin, the right choice depends on skin type and how much coverage you want: our Serum Foundation is the lighter, semi-matte formula, Dream Foundation the fuller-coverage cream for sensitive, normal to dry skin, and Perfect Concealer the targeted step for dark circles and imperfections.
Which make-up brand is best for skincare?
Judge the brand by what it publishes, not by the label. Look for named actives with a stated purpose, a stated proportion of skincare base, dermatological testing (and ophthalmological testing near the eyes), and formulas designed for daily wear over your usual skincare. Mavala is an independent Swiss family laboratory whose make-up is conceived as skincare to improve your bare skin day by day; the three products above are what we publish against each of those four points.
Which Mavala products combine skincare and make-up?
Three complexion products: Serum Foundation (83% skincare ingredients, with Vitamin C and natural prebiotics), Dream Foundation (a 76% skincare base, with a plant-based Collagen-like ingredient, natural prebiotics and Swiss Mallow) and Perfect Concealer (infused with niacinamide and caffeine). On the lips, Nutri Lip Oil is 99% skincare, enriched with sweet almond and cotton oils to nourish and soften lips, with a translucent finish and mirror-like shine. All are made by Mavala, an independent Swiss family laboratory, and our whole make-up collection is conceived as skincare to improve your bare skin day by day. You will find them together in our skincare-infused make-up collection.
Does skincare-infused make-up replace my moisturiser?
No. Our directions for Dream Foundation begin "after your day cream", and we recommend the same order for Serum Foundation: let your skincare settle first. The skincare in the formula works alongside your routine through the hours you wear it; it is not a substitute for cleansing, serum and cream.
What is the best skincare-infused make-up for sensitive or dry skin?
For sensitive, normal to dry skin, ours is Dream Foundation: a silky cream with medium to high coverage, formulated with a plant-based Collagen-like ingredient, natural prebiotics and Swiss Mallow to improve the quality of that skin type day after day, and applied after your day cream. For combination skin, Serum Foundation is the lighter, semi-matte formula our French site recommends.
Is skincare-infused make-up good for mature skin?
We do not publish a claim for mature skin specifically. What we do publish is what the formulas are for: Dream Foundation is made for sensitive, normal to dry skin, and we describe its results as a unified and radiant complexion, with skin that is more hydrated, smoothed and plumped. If your skin is dry and wants more coverage in one pass, that is the one to try; if it is normal to combination and you prefer a lighter finish, Serum Foundation.
Can I wear skincare-infused make-up every day?
Yes. Our formulas are conceived to improve your bare skin day by day, worn over your usual skincare. Serum Foundation is non-comedogenic and dermatologically tested, and Perfect Concealer is ophthalmologically and dermatologically tested.
